Why Do I Need Water Backup Coverage?
Spring is right around the corner and soon the April showers will be upon us. Many homeowners in Indiana and Ohio have basements and are at risk for water backing up through the drains. Although water backing up from your sewer or drains can occur at any time of the year, it seems that it happens more often in the Spring in the Midwest.
Did you know that most home insurance policies can be endorsed to provide coverage if this should happen? For as little as $35 a year, you can buy $5,000 in coverage to protect yourself in the event of a loss.. Take into consideration what valuables you may have in your basement as you may need quite a bit more coverage than this. Insurance Companies sell this coverage in $5,000 and it is not uncommon to see policies with $25,000 in water back up coverage.
Just remember that on most homeowners insurance policies in Indiana, you must have your insurance agent endorse your policy to trigger this coverage.
Water Backup vs. Flood
Ask your agent are covered for this and for how much. Remember that water backup coverage is not the same as flood coverage. Even if you purchase water backup, a flood policy may still be needed. Rates for flood insurance vary depending on what flood zone you are in.
